I love RSS feeds. In fact, I love them a bit too much, subscribing to far too many to deal with them in an efficient manner. I’ve developed some coping mechanisms using free software to further aggregate their content and process it on my time.
My workflow for dealing with feed overload is fairly straightforward. I mark the articles I actually wish to read with Read It Later List via its Google Reader integration.
Reader with Read it Later List integration
I take 5 or so minutes in the morning to sweep my feeds to my list. This gives me an extremely high-level view of my feeds allows me to postpone the reading to when I have time.
Throughout the day, I read the pre-selected items from the list. If there’s further reading linked on the pages, I let the tool capture them for later reading.
Another handy tool is Yahoo Pipes. I use pipes to filter out ‘Via’ links for sites i already read and ‘navel-gazing’ posts. I also filter out subjects in which I’m not interested in order to shrink the pool of potential items for my list.
