I like this Stephen Chu fellow:
Making roads and roofs a paler colour could have the equivalent effect of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years.
This is a form of albedo adjustment, and it is also the reason the polar ice caps will heat up as more non-white surface appears under the ice.

The albedo trick is already used in various tropical climates to reduce cooling costs. When I think of cool architecture, I think of the white houses with tile roofs in Greece and other near-equatorial locations.
Of course cost wins out when building new structures and flat roofs are often black because both roofing plastic and tar are black.
Cool roofs from the consumer energy center explains some of the savings involved with using white roofs.
BTW, you can also do this with an existing asphalt roof using a sprayer, so it’s never too late to apply this technique to your home. I’m going to see when we next roof our condominiums and suggest to the property manager that we go white.
